The students, first-graders from Fulmar Road Elementary School in Mahopac, were at Madden participating in a lesson on the food web when a portion of the ceiling gave way at 11:30 a.m.
A teacher notified Mahopac Central School district and called 911. Kent Police were the first on the scene followed quickly by Kent Fire Department 1.
Six students who appeared to have minor injuries were taken by ambulance to Putnam Hospital Center where they were examined and released. The remaining 18 students were taken by bus to the hospital where they were met by their parents.
Some of those students were also examined and released, while others were simply taken home by their parents.
The building has been secured and is not accessible.
"At this time, the cause of the collapse is under investigation," Lane said. "Putnam-Northern Westchester BOCES, which operates the Madden Outdoor Education Center, and the Mahopac Central School District remain committed to student safety first and foremost."
